<p>Koitajoki   is a river in Eastern Finland and partly in Russia in Northern Europe. Having its origin just by the international boundary in Ilomantsi of Northern Karelia in Finland, the Koitajoki River enters the territory of the Republic of Karelia in Russia, to return to Finland some 30 km further south. It then flows northwest through the Petkeljärvi National Park and the Kesonsuo bog area, and further downstream receives the outflow from Lake Koitere. The main part of the waters are then directed through an underground tunnel of the 84-megawatt Pamilo hydroelectric power plant, which bypasses some 20 km of the natural course of the lowest part of the river.</p><br>
<p>Koitajoki is a tributary of Pielisjoki that flows from the lake Pielinen into Lake Pyhäselkä in Northern Karelia, Finland. It is part of the Vuoksi River basin in Finland and Russia, which flows through Lake Ladoga in Russia and further through the Neva River into the Gulf of Finland.</p><br>
<p>The Utroya  is a river of Latvia and Pytalovsky and Ostrovsky Districts of Pskov Oblast of Russia, a left tributary of the Velikaya River. It is 176 km long, and the area of its basin 3,000 km&sup2;. The principal tributary is the Lzha . The towns of Kārsava and Pytalovo are located on the banks of the Rītupe/Utroya.</p><br>
<p>The source of the Rītupe is Lake Meirānu in the lake district south of the town of Kārsava. The river flows north, passes 2 km from the center of Karsava, at a short stretch makes the state border between Latvia and Russia, and crosses into the Russian territory, to Pytalovsky District of Pskov Oblast. The official name of the river in Russia is the Utroya. The river further flows northwest, passes the town of Pytalovo, crosses into Ostrovsky District, accepts the Lzha from the right, and turns north. The mouth of the Utroya is in the village of Larino.</p><br>
<p>The drainage basin of the Utroya includes areas in the northeastern Latvia, as well as almost whole Pytalkovsky District, the western part of Ostrovsky District, as well as minor areas in the western part of Krasnogorodsky District of Pskov Oblast in Russia.</p><br>
<p>Dunagiri  is one of the high peaks of the Chamoli District Himalayas in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. It lies at the northwest corner of the Sanctuary Wall, a ring of peaks surrounding Nanda Devi and enclosing the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.</p><br>
<p>Dunagiri was first climbed on 5 July 1939 by the Swiss climbers André Roch, F. Steuri, and D. Zogg, via the southwest ridge. In 1975, Joe Tasker and Dick Renshaw climbed a particularly difficult route on the southeast buttress in a significant milestone for alpine-style climbing. In 1978 the first Australian Himalayan expedition by the Australian National University Mountaineering Club made the fourth ascent via the south-west ridge. Lincoln Hall and Tim Macartney-Snape made the final summit attempt with Macartney-Snape successfully summiting.</p><br>
<p>The Churton Memorial Fountain stands on the west side of Brownlow Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The fountain was built in 1882 by John Churton as a memorial to his parents and wife, and was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. It was originally situated at the junctions of Brownlow Street, Green End, Talbot Street and Station Road. In the early 1930s it was moved to its present position further along Brownlow Street because it was interfering with traffic flow.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The memorial takes the form of a drinking fountain. On the front and back are copper spouts in the form of lions heads, and at the sides are semicircular animal drinking troughs. It is constructed in stone and has an octagonal plan; it is in Gothic Revival style. The base is in granite with alternating pink and grey bands, while the upper parts are in sandstone ashlar with red and grey bands. At the front and back, above the spouts, are panels flanked by buttresses, surmounted by crocketted gables and finials. On each side are disused gas mantles. At the top is an octagonal pinnacle over which is a crocketted spire with a wrought iron cross finial. The memorial includes two inscriptions: one refers to the donor, while the other is taken from St Johns Gospel.</p><br>
<p>Lone Star Geyser is a cone type geyser located in the Lone Star Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. The basin is a backcountry geyser basin located 3 mi southeast of Old Faithful Geyser and the Upper Geyser Basin. The geyser is reached via an old service road open to hikers and biking with the trailhead near Kepler Cascades on the Grand Loop Road.</p><br>
<p>Lone Star erupts about every 3 hours and last about 30 minutes and reaches a heights of 35 to 40 ft.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Aubrey L. Haines, the Yellowstone park historian from 1960 to 1969, relates three stories as to how this geyser was named:</p><br>
<p>In 1882, two Northern Pacific Railroad surveyors working in the Upper Geyser Basin region came upon the geyser and assumed because of its remote location that they were the first to discover it. They named it Lone Star Geyser in their notes.</p><br>
<p>In 1879, Colonel W. D. Pickett and J.M.V. Cochran, two hunters who had camped near Old Faithful, referred to the geyser as Lone Star during a discussion they had with Henry Bird Calfee, a noted Yellowstone photographer, during a later part of their hunting trip.</p><br>
<p>The Hayden Geological Survey of 1872 named this geyser Solitary Geyser but that name was later given to another geyser northeast of Old Faithful.</p><br>
<p>Vine Street Hill Cemetery is a notable nonprofit cemetery located at 3701 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Members of the German Evangelical Reform Churches of St. Peter and St. Paul of Cincinnati founded the cemetery, now known as the Vine Street Hill Cemetery in 1849. On February 26, 1850 the first land for the cemetery was purchased from Samuel West. In August 1882 additional land was purchased from F. Feldman and S. West.</p><br>
<p>The cemetery was originally known as the German Evangelical Protestant Cemetery on Carthage Road or just Carthage Road Cemetery, located three and one half miles from the City of Cincinnati. The name of Carthage for this section of the road starting north of Glenmary Avenue was changed to Vine Street after the suburb of Clifton was annexed to Cincinnati in 1896.</p><br>
<p>The original and main entrance to the cemetery is 3701 Vine Street and the cemetery became known as the Vine Street Hill Cemetery in 1941.</p><br>
<p>The German-American architect-builders George and August Brink of Cincinnati designed the chapel located in the center of the cemetery. Cost estimates for the new chapel complex was $15,000 as reported in an article appearing in The Inland Architect in 1884. The German Evangelical Protestant Cemetery Chapel was named to the National Register of Historic Places on February 28, 2008. The chapel’s architectural details and craftsmanship expands knowledge of the work and contributions of German-American architects-builders and the specific contributions of George and August Brink to late nineteenth century Cincinnati.</p><br>
<p>George and August Brink are also credited for the remodeling of John Hauck&#39;s home on Dayton Street in Cincinnati. John Hauck was a prominent German-American brewer in Cincinnati and his home is now a museum within the Dayton Street Historic District.</p><br>

<p>The B.A. and Ruth Stover House is a historic 1924 residence in Bend, Oregon, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.</p><br>
<p>Located at 1 NW Rocklyn Road, the two-story, gabled English Cottage style house was built on a former Indian campground at the northern littoral of Mirror Pond. The pond was created in 1909 when the Deschutes River was dammed for hydroelectric power. The house was designed by Hugh Thompson and the contractor was Henry Nelson (1890–1984). Thompson was a friend of the Stovers, and also designed the Capitol Theater (1922) on Wall Street that Stover purchased from Dennis Carmody.</p><br>
<h2>Background</h2><br>
<p>Stover worked at the Bend Company mill and was a bank teller at Independent First National Bank. He served in World War I including at Château-Thierry in France, and was a theater owner and clothing retailer. Known as a youth booster, he organized the first annual Bend Water Pageant and was elected a State Representative, serving in the 1951-195 legislature under governors Douglas McKay and Paul Patterson. He was a member of numerous organizations. Bend&#39;s Stover Park is named after him.</p><br>
<p>Stovers wife, Ruth Cushing, was born in Spokane, Washington to pioneer parents. She was the first four-year graduate to receive a diploma at Portlands Jefferson High School in 1913, attended Eastern Washington Normal School in Cheney, and taught in Riparia, Washington and Salem, Oregon.</p><br>
<p>Christina Lake  is an elongated lake in northern Alberta, Canada, located east of Conklin, between Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray, near Highway 881. Christina Lake and the Christina River are named to honour Christine Gordon, originally from Scotland, who was the first white woman to live permanently in the Fort McMurray area.</p><br>
<h2>Water and Watershed</h2><br>
<p>The lake lies at an elevation of 556 m and has a total area of 21.3 km&sup2;. It has a mean depth of 17.3 m and reaches a maximum depth of 32.9 m. It is drained by the Jackfish River at its western end; the Jackfish River flows 11 km before it empties into the Christina River, a tributary of the Clearwater River. Christina Lake has a drainage area of 1,250 km&sup2;. The Lake has 6 permanent inlets and 1 permanent outlet, the Jackfish River.</p><br>
<h2>Lake History</h2><br>
<p>Christina Lake and the Christina River were named to honour Christine Gordon, the first white woman to live permanently in the Fort McMurray area where she remained until she died in the 1940s. She was highly respected by the community, including the First Nations and Metis. Gordon, partly from knowledge gleaned from a Scottish home nursing book, made her own treatments for illnesses and injuries. She could "splint a broken arm, lower a fever, and mix herbal remedies." By 1914 she owned and operated a post in Fort McMurray, in competition with the Hudson&#39;s Bay Company.</p><br>
<p>The hamlet of Conklin was originally situated on the extreme northwestern end of Christina Lake, adjacent to the outlet to the Jackfish River. When the Northern Alberta Railways reached there in 1921, Conklin was relocated alongside the railway tracks. Christina Lake was an important centre for the local fur trade from 1940 to 1960. Mink pelts from several mink farms in the area were transferred by canoe and dogsled to the railway siding.</p><br>
<p>From 1940 to 1960 there was heavy commercial fishing in Christina Lake with a fish processing plant at the outlet to the Jackfish River.</p><br>
<h2>Forest Fires</h2><br>
<p>The Lac la Biche Forest that surrounds some of Christina Lake experiences a higher-than-average number of lightning storms.</p><br>

<p>There are small stands of conifers, mixed wood and pure aspen but most of the timber is not merchantable.</p><br>
<h3>Mineral Resources</h3><br>
<p>There are important mineral resources within the Christina Lake area including natural gas which was already being extracted in 1991. The Christina Lake area has oil sands potential and falls within a portion of the Athabasca Oil Sands area.</p><br>
<p>Cenovus Energy has been operating its Christina Lake project since 2000. It is a steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) project in the Christina Lake area, tapping bitumen from the McMurray Formation. Cenovus considers the Christina Lake project to be "top-tier", one of their "two industry-leading oil sands producing projects" with "huge potential for growth." Located about 120 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, they started Christina Lake in 2000. The oil at Christina Lake is located about 375 metres below the surface and requires specialized technology, like steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) to drill and pump it to the surface.</p><br>
<p>Driedmeat Lake is a long ribbon lake in Alberta; part of the Battle River system. It lies south of the city of Camrose. The city draws its water supply from the lake. It was originally created by a glacial meltwater channel,</p><br>
<p>which carved the surrounding valley. In the valley and around it, Saskatoon berries, an ingredient of pemmican, grow and are endemic in the area.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Before Europeans settled on the land, the Blackfoot tribe and Cree natives would use the area around the lake to camp and hunt. The resulting name of "Driedmeat" comes from the Cree word for drying Bison meat and making pemmican. A nearby hill was the origin of the lakes name, the hill&#39;s name itself is Driedmeat. Which is now disrupted by gravel extraction operations.</p><br>
<p>In 1885, Joseph Tyrrell described a Metis settlement of forty families along the Battle River four miles from Driedmeat lake. They lived in "substantial log houses." Their cultivation of crops allowed them to be self-sustaining. Crops included wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, turnips, and Indian corn. Live stock included horses, cattle and sheep; all healthy, Tyrrell observed.</p><br>
<h2>Natural history</h2><br>
<p>Driedmeat Lake is considered a highly eutrophic lake.</p><br>
<h3>Flora</h3><br>
<p>The most common aquatic plant of Driedmeat Lake is a blue-green algal bloom. Aquatic macrophytes are another notable feature of Driedmeat Lake, especially in the northern and southern thirds of the lake. Aquatic plants form mats on the surface and make it difficult for boats to travel.</p><br>
<p>Fourteen species of aquatic macrophytes were identified by Alberta Environment during a 1984 survey of Driedmeat Lake. The most abundant plants were pondweeds (Potamogeton richardsonii, P. vaginatus and P. pectinatus) and coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum).</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>Driedmeat Lake provides important nesting habitat for waterfowl and is an important fall staging area for swans and Canada geese. Flocks of White Pelicans feed on the lake.</p><br>
<p>In 1939, the provincial government was petitioned to have the lake classified as a bird sanctuary (Gould 1939). The region is now a Restricted Wildlife Area, which means that hunting of waterfowl and upland game birds is not allowed within 0.8 km of the lake until 1 November each year. From November until the end of hunting season, hunting is permitted to encourage waterfowl to continue their migration.</p><br>
<p>Frank Farley published the Birds of the Battle River Region in 1932. He owned a farm located alongside Driedmeat Lake. He writes of his own sighting of birds on his property.</p><br>
<h4>Fish</h4><br>
<p>Driedmeat Lake is popular for angling for northern pike in summer and for ice-fishing in winter. Other species found in the lake include longnose dace, lake chub, emerald shiner, spottail shiner, white sucker and brook stickleback. Fish and Wildlife officials estimate that there are 46,800 ± 18,000 pike in the lake.</p><br>
<h2>Resoures use</h2><br>
<p>Driedmeat Lake provides water for the city of Camrose. On a typical day, the people of Camrose use 5.5 million litres of water. In 2010, the level of the lake was raised just over half a meter. A new steel sheet piling weir was constructed directly upstream from the existing weir. The total cost of the project, including changes to the existing fishway, constructing of a new public access road and parking lot, was $1,178,431.15.</p><br>
<p>The Pennsylvania Railroad G5s was a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives built by the PRR&#39;s Juniata Shops in the mid-late 1920s. It was designed for passenger trains, particularly on commuter lines, and became a fixture on suburban railroads  until the mid-1950s. The G5s was the largest and most powerful 4-6-0 locomotive, except for a single Southern Pacific 4-6-0 that outweighed it by 5500 lb.</p><br>
<h2>History and Design</h2><br>
<p>In the 1920s the Pennsylvania Railroad needed a locomotive for commuter trains. When the first G5s rolled out of the Juniata shops in 1923, the Pennsylvania Railroad hadnt built a 4-6-0 in more than two decades. Mechanical Engineer William F. Kiesel, Jr. who designed the engine used the boiler from an E6s Atlantic and designed one of the largest and most powerful ten-wheelers ever built. Smaller drive wheels than an Atlantic and the lack of a trailing truck put more weight on the drivers and produced an engine with great power and acceleration but a lower top speed. The 4-6-0 wheel arrangement could provide sufficient tractive effort, (41,000 lbs of tractive force) but at the same time, allow the locomotive to accelerate the train more quickly. Such a design was ideal for the frequent stops on PRR commuter lines. 90 G5s locomotives were built for the PRR between 1923 and 1925 at the railroads Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Thirty-one more were built between 1924 and 1929 for the Long Island Rail Road, then a PRR subsidiary. Like the I1s Decapod the G5s was infamous among enginemen for rough riding; locomotive historian Alvin Staufer said "Riding qualities were sacrificed for power when Pennsy designed these G5s Ten Wheelers."</p><br>
<h2>Service on the Pennsylvania Railroad</h2><br>
<p>PRRs 90 G5s locomotives were used between cities and suburban areas. Many G5ss were in the Pittsburgh area, but the class was also used in New Jersey and around Chicago and Fort Wayne. However, the class was not limited to commuter service. In his book Pennsy Power, Alvin Staufer cites a G5s-led milk train that ran 145 miles daily through rural Pennsylvania, trailing an old combine for the occasional passenger - which sometimes included a hunter that the crew would let off at a clearing in the woods. Fan trips as early as the 1930s also were headed by ten-wheelers: "Off the Beaten Track excursions covering branch lines frequently drew G5s power, since larger engines were prohibited." Work trains were another assignment too menial for mainline power but fine for the versatile G5s, which often elicited adjectives such as "gutsy," "squat," "tough," or "husky." By 1929 it was the only 4-6-0 class remaining in service on the PRR.</p><br>
<h2>Service on Long Island</h2><br>
<p>The G5s was the primary passenger locomotive on the Long Island Railroad until the end of steam operations, sharing the duty with K4ss and other G5s leased from the PRR, as well as diesels such as the Alco RS3 that ultimately replaced them. The G5s locomotives on Long Island differed slightly from those produced for the PRR, with a larger tender typically used by the K4s.</p><br>
<p>The G5s was the last steam locomotive to operate in revenue service on Long Island. The last seven in operation, numbers 21, 24, 32, 35, 38, 39, and 50, were in service until late 1955. In October of that year, a special "End of Steam Ceremony" was held at Hicksville. Engines 35 and 39 each pulled a single coach to the station with local Boy Scouts on board. Upon arriving, the coaches were uncoupled from the two steam engines, and each coupled to an Alco RS3 diesel locomotive. 35 and 39 were then coupled nose to nose, and ran west to the shops at Morris Park. 35 would run one more fantrip the following week.</p><br>
<h2>Preservation</h2><br>
<p>The G5s is one of the best preserved classes of Pennsy steam locomotives, with three surviving examples.</p><br>
<p>PRR 5741 - Selected by the PRR itself for preservation upon its retirement, currently on permanent static display in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. 5741 was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as Freight Locomotive No. 5741.</p><br>
<p>LIRR 35 - Donated by the LIRR to Nassau County. 35 was displayed in Eisenhower Park until 1978, and is now based at the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum in Oyster Bay, NY. The museum is working to secure funding for the full restoration of the locomotive. This includes a conversion to oil firing, and possibly a new tender. Engine 35 was recently inspected by contractors from Steam Operations Corps, and thoroughly cleaned in preparation for the locomotive being shipped to Alabama for further restoration. It is currently sitting in pieces at the museum site.</p><br>
<p>LIRR 39 - Offered by the LIRR to Suffolk County, it was rejected by the Suffolk County Board of Supervisors in 1956. LIRR then offered #39 for display to the Carriage Museum in Stony Brook, New York (presently, The Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages), where it was exhibited until 1980.</p><br>
<p>In 1980 the Project #39 Restoration Committee moved the locomotive to Riverhead, New York, for restoration. In 1992 the engine came under the care of the Railroad Museum of Long Island, (RMLI), based at Greenport and Riverhead, New York. The boiler and firebox are currently being restored at the Strasburg Railroad Company, Strasburg, Pennsylvania, while the rest of the locomotive remains at Riverhead.</p><br>
<p>In 2013 the RMLI initiated a nationwide fundraising effort to raise $900,000 dollars towards the restoration of the locomotive. The restoration included an agreement to lease it to the Strasburg Rail Road for a period of 48 years, with Strasburg Rail Road contributing over $1 million additional dollars towards its restoration. The locomotive may possibly be in full operation on the Strasburg Railroad in three to five years after fundraising goals are met.</p><br>
<p>Mason District Number 5 Schoolhouse is a former two room rural schoolhouse in Mason Township, Cass County, Michigan built in 1874; the school could hold up to 110 students.</p><br>
<p>The school house is listed on both the National Register of Historic Sites and the Michigan registry of Historic Sites.</p><br>
<p>The current uses are still a split use government building, where the historic school house is used by the Cass District Library for the Mason-Union Branch and the new addition in the back, being used by the township.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The school house was built between 1874 and 1875 at the cost of about $3,000. It has been known as the Sailor School and the Kessington School house. In 1964 Mason Township board bought the building for use as the township hall. In 1973 the Cass County Library founded and established a branch library in the township hall to serve the members of the South-East corner of the county. In 1987, the building was restored.</p><br>
<p>The bell that was on top of the school house was built by the Gould Mrf. Co of Seneca Falls, New York. The bell weights about 290 pounds and was shipped from New York to Mason.</p><br>
<p>The bell that sits outside the schoolhouse now has not always been with the school. After the bell was installed it stayed with the building until a reconstruction project took place on the building during the 1970s. The bell was dropped from the belfry and york was cracked or broke. The bell could not be reinstalled so it was left sitting on the ground until a local farmer bought the bell from the township, and then sold it to a family member who lived in Wichita, Kansas. Several attempts were made to buy the bell back to restore it with the building. However the owner refused to sell the bell until 1996 when he contacted the township and stated that he was willing to sell the bell. Two local people went to buy the bell and had the yoke fixed before donating it to the township. After almost 25 years after the bell was sold it was returned to the schoolhouse.</p><br>

<p>The Mason District Number 5 Schoolhouse is a one-story, T-plan, yellow brick structure resting on a fieldstone foundation. Raised dark red brick trim forms Italianate-inspired hood molds over the arched windows and door frame and trims the cornice, forming triangle-shaped downward projections which mimic the appearance of brackets. In the raking eaves, the red brick trim is inset with yellow brick crosses. A double row of red brick also forms a belt course marking the separation between the first floor and foundation on the exterior. A gable-roofed, single-story addition, constructed c. 1988, extends off of the rear of the building.</p><br>
<p>The text that is listed about the schoolhouse on the Michigan Register of sites for the Statement of Significance reads:</p><br>
<p>In size and architectural distinction, the District Number 5 Schoolhouse is far in advance of the typical late nineteenth-century rural Michigan school building. Constructed in 1875, the structure served Mason Township as a school for up to 110 students until 1959. In 1964, the schoolhouse was reopened as the township hall. Since 1972, the former District Number 5 Schoolhouse has accommodated the Mason-Union Branch of the Cass County Library as well as the township hall.</p><br>
<p>The marker text that has been placed on the site reads as follows:</p><br>
<p>DISTRICT SCHOOLHOUSE This late-Victorian schoolhouse was built in 1874-1875. Constructed at a cost of $3,000, it is made of locally manufactured yellow and red brick. The 1882 Cass County History described it as "the best rural schoolhouse in the State." Its two classrooms could accommodate 110 pupils. The school was used until the local district was absorbed into the Constantine School District in 1959. In 1964 the building became the township hall; and in 1972, the Mason Union Branch of the Cass County Library.</p><br>
<h2>Film</h2><br>
<p>The building and the bell are highlighted in a documentary called "From Moccasins to Main Street" which was produced by Equity Studios Inc. The documentary is a tour of the Native American Sauk Trail what is now US 12.</p><br>
<p>Beauregard Parish Jail is a former jailhouse in DeRidder, Louisiana built in 1914 in the Gothic Revival architecture style. It is referred to as the Gothic jail or the Hanging jail. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 17, 1981. The jail is owned by the Beauregard Parish Police Jury. The Beauregard Parish Rehabilitation Committee serves under the direction of the Police Jury with the primary duty of the preserving the jail. The Beauregard Tourist Commission has a vested interest in the jail and other historic sites and has been involved in many aspects of securing a continued future of the jail.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Hudson River Lumber Company donated a tract of land to the City of DeRidder for a courthouse and jail. The newly formed Beauregard Parish Police Jury, carved out of the old Imperial Calcasieu Parish, purchased the property and a building from the church. Stevens-Nelson of New Orleans designed a courthouse and jail. Falls City Construction Company was awarded the contract in September 1913. Both buildings were completed in 1915 at a cost of $168,000.</p><br>
<h3>Notoriety</h3><br>
<p>"J. J. Brevelle was a taxi driver who was murdered by his "fares" while taking them to a rural destination. Brevelle is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. The two men who were found guilty of his murder were hanged in the old parish jail on March 9, 1928. Deputy Sheriff Gill was the hangman. Joe Genna, age 25, was pronounced dead at 1:06 PM and Molton Brasseaux at 1:29 PM. Neither man was buried in Beauregard Parish."</p><br>
<p>It was after this incident, the Beauregard Parish Jail, sometimes referred to as the Gothic jail, also became known as the Hanging Jail</p><br>
<h2>Culture</h2><br>
<p>The structure not only made history because of its unique design but also because there was a toilet, shower, lavatory, and window in each cell. A large spiral staircase gave access to each cell. Architectural historian Johnathan Fricker stated, "The old jail is unique in structure, it has the possible distinction of being the only penal institution in the country using "Collegiate Gothic" design in the first decade of the 20th century." The jail could "house" over 50 prisoners. There was a jailers&#39; quarters on the bottom floor as well as a kitchen. There is a tunnel leading from the courthouse to the jail that was used to transport prisoners for trial.</p><br>
<h3>Current</h3><br>
<p>The building is currently not in use. Options are being explored as to current plans for the jail. On August 2, 2007, the Beauregard Tourist Commission submitted the building (noted as Beauregard Parish Jail "Gothic Jail") for inclusion in the Louisiana Preservation Alliance&#39;s annual Ten Most Endangered List. This will open new avenues for funding for the building. Negotiations are underway for the jail to be used in an up-coming movie.</p><br>
<p>Mount Everts el. 7,846 ft is a prominent mountain peak in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming near Mammoth Hot Springs. The peak was named for Truman C. Everts, a member of the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition of 1870. Mount Everts is located immediately due south of Gardiner, Montana and due east of Mammoth Hot Springs.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Mount Everts was named by Henry D. Washburn shortly after the rescue of Truman C. Everts, who had been lost for 37 days in Yellowstone at the conclusion of the Washburn Expedition. During the expedition, Washburn named a peak (now called Mount Sheridan ) in the Thorofare region south of Yellowstone Lake for Everts but later changed it to the current peak, believing it was very near the location of Everts&#39; rescue. Everts was in fact rescued a few miles to the northeast, near where Blacktail Deer Creek enters the Yellowstone River at the northern park boundary, and the mountain is the dominant feature separating what is now known as Gardiner from the northerly flowing Yellowstone River. Mr. Everts complained until his death that the far more grand Mount Sheridan should have been named after him.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The majority of Mt. Everts is made of Cretaceous era sediments. The Cretaceous Interior Seaway deposited sediments across North America from 120-70 million years ago. The first of these deposits in the Yellowstone region was the Telegraph Creek formation (100 mya) and is predominantly shale. The Eagle formation (75 mya) is dominated by sandstone and was deposited in shallower water along deltas and beaches. The Everts formation (70 mya) is dominated by sandstone and has coal seams from plant debris that collected in swampy areas.</p><br>
<p>There are no rocks on Mt. Everts from 65 to 2.1 million years ago. The absence of rocks is called an unconformity. During this period few or no rocks were deposited, and erosion carried away any sediments that were deposited.</p><br>
<p>The eruption of the Yellowstone hot spot 2.1 million years ago deposited the Huckleberry Ridge tuff on the southern part of Mt. Everts. It is the youngest rock on the mountain. The tuff was made by multiple eruptions around 2.1 million years ago. Ash fall from the earliest part of the eruption was deposited first and can be seen as a thin strip of white rock eight feet tall. This air fall ash was so hot that it baked the sedimentary rocks it covered. The sedimentary rocks turned a darker shade of red because the heat caused red iron oxide minerals to form.</p><br>
<p>Next, pyroclastic flows moved through the region, sometimes at speeds of hundreds of miles per hour, depositing the bulk of the Huckleberry Ridge tuff. The tuff was originally deposited evenly across the area when the region was lower than surrounding hills. Deposits from streams just beneath the Huckleberry Ridge tuff show that this area was at a low elevation just before the eruption.</p><br>
<p>A combination of thermal bulging and erosion caused Mt. Everts to rise 1600 feet in the last 2.1 million years. This is called topographic inversion, because the lower areas become the higher areas. Thermal bulging related to the Yellowstone hot spot caused the bulk of the uplift. Erosion of surrounding areas also deepened nearby canyons because the tuff is harder, and therefore more resistant to erosion, than the other rocks.</p><br>
<p>Temescal Creek  is an approximately 29 mi watercourse in Riverside County, in the USA state of California. Flowing primarily in a northwestern direction, it connects Lake Elsinore with the Santa Ana River. It drains the eastern slopes of the Santa Ana Mountains on its left and on its right the western slopes of the Temescal Mountains along its length. With a drainage basin of about 1,000 square miles, it is the largest tributary of the Santa Ana River, hydrologically connecting the 720 square miles San Jacinto River and Lake Elsinore watersheds to the rest of the Santa Ana watershed. However, flowing through an arid rain shadow zone of the Santa Ana Mountains, and with diversion of ground water for human use, the creek today is ephemeral for most of its length, except for runoff from housing developments and agricultural return flows.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Prior to 1886, Temescal Valley and Temescal Creek that flowed through it had much more water than today. In May, 1886 the South Riverside Land and Water Company was incorporated, and it purchased the lands of Rancho La Sierra of Bernardo Yorba, and the Rancho Temescal grant where the colony of South Riverside was laid out. They also secured the water rights to Temescal Creek, its tributaries and Lee Lake. Dams and pipelines were built to carry the water to the colony. In 1889 the Temescal Water Company was incorporated, to supply water for the new colony. This company purchased all the water-bearing lands in the valley and began drilling artesian wells.</p><br>
<p>The first wells flowed, at a depth of 300 feet. However, pumping plants soon had to be installed as the water table fell. In time all the water of both Temescal and Coldwater Creeks was turned into pipe lines. Cienagas and springs were drained, and, gradually, the central portion of the Temescal Valley became dry and desolate. Farms and orchards in Temescal the central part of the Temescal Valley were abandoned by 1918.</p><br>
<p>In the 1890s Lake Elsinore water was purchased by the Temescal Water Company for the irrigation of land in Corona, California. Its outlet channel was deepened, permitting gravity flow down the natural channel of Temescal Canyon to Corona for a year or more after the water level sank below the natural elevation of its outlet. As the lake surface continued to recede, a pumping plant was installed, and pumping was continued a few seasons, but the concentration of salts in the lake, due to the evaporation and lack of rainfall, soon made the water unfit for irrigation, and the project was abandoned by the company. Another consequence of this drainage was that the hot springs along the course of the upper creek near Lake Elsinore and in the Warm Springs Valley, ceased to flow and wells had to be dug to obtain those waters.</p><br>
<p>The water shortage was relieved by the construction of the Colorado River Aqueduct and the building of its terminal reservoir Lake Mathews in 1939. The reservoir is in the upper part of Cajalco Canyon and the lower reach of the Cajalco Valley, on the course of Cajalco Creek, tributary to Temescal Wash.</p><br>
<h2>Watershed</h2><br>
<p>Today Temescal Creek begins as the Elsinore Spillway Channel, an overflow channel that now confines its upper reaches through the middle of downtown Lake Elsinore, then turns and passes northwestward into the Warm Springs Valley, past its confluence with Wasson Canyon Wash, on the right, until it is past the water treatment plant. There it is permitted to spread out into a natural creek, where it has its confluence with Arroyo Del Toro and Stovepipe Canyon Wash on its right, then passes through Walker Canyon gathering in the Gavilan Wash on its right midway on its length, then to where Alberhill Canyon Creek enters on the right Temescal Creek emerges from Walker Canyon. There it has its confluence with the wash of Rice Canyon Creek on its left near Alberhill and Ceramic Factory Canyon Creek on its right across the creek from the ceramic factory. Shortly afterward it crosses underneath the Escondido (I-15) Freeway, is joined by Horsetheif Canyon Creek on its left and flows into Lee Lake, formed by an earthen dam across the creek at the northwest end of the valley before its confluence on its left with Indian Canyon Creek.</p><br>
<p>The creek is then blocked to the northwest by a ridge of the Santa Ana Mountains running northeast to a steep 1577 foot summit overlooking the deep canyon between it and Estelle Mountain. This ridge divides the Temescal Valley below from the upper valley of Temescal creek. Descending through this unnamed canyon, the creek makes a half circle around the ridge to the north of Lee Lake to enter the Temescal Valley. The creek levels out after leaving the Estelle Mountain canyon, passing through a natural riverbed, the creek receives Mayhew Canyon Wash from the left, Dawson Canyon Wash from the right, Coldwater Canyon Creek and the waters of Brown Canyon Wash and its tributary of McBribe Canyon Creek from the left, Olsen Canyon Wash and Cajalco Creek from the right and Bedford Canyon Wash and Joseph Canyon from the left before entering Temescal Canyon.</p><br>
<p>As it emerges from Temescal Canyon, north of El Cerrito the creek enters a second reservoir and is forced into a concrete channel. It then flows through the northern part of the city of Corona taking in the Main Street Canyon Wash and Oak Avenue Drain on its left and Arlington Valley Channel on its right before entering into the Prado Flood Control Basin, formed by the Prado Dam across the Santa Ana River. The basin consists of a series of wetlands where Temescal Creek merges with the Santa Ana. In floods, however, the area is a lake, and Temescal Creek&#39;s confluence with the larger river is submerged.</p><br>

<p>Hubbles Lake is a lake in Alberta. It resides in Parkland County, Alberta, Canada, and is approximately a 20-minute drive on Highway 16 westward out of Edmonton Alberta.</p><br>
<p>This small lake is bordered on the east and west by Range Road 13 and Range Road 14 respectively and bordered on the north and south by highway 16 and highway 16A.</p><br>
<p>The water in the lake is very clear and quantities of algae are usually low compared to the other lakes in the area.</p><br>
<p>The clear water and surprising depth of Hubbles Lake (30 m) make it a popular destination for local SCUBA divers and occasional swimming and triathelon competitions.</p><br>
<p>No hydrocarbon fueled boats / vehicles are allowed on the lake except for emergency response, making it a safe swimming or canoeing lake.</p><br>
<p>The lake is home to many birds species. The most common birds are; Loons, Common Turns, Griebs, ducks, Canada Geese, Muskrats, Blue Jays, Red Winged Black birds and owls. The most common fish in the lake are Northern Pike and Perch.</p><br>
<p>Iosegun Lake is a lake in northwest Alberta within the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16. It is located north of Fox Creek, approximately 11 km from Highway 43.</p><br>
<p>Iosegun is a name derived from an Indian language denoting "tail".</p><br>
<h2>Provincial recreation area</h2><br>
<p>The Iosegun Lake Provincial Recreation Area is located on the southeast shore of Iosegun Lake at the mouth of an unnamed creek originating at nearby Raspberry Lake to the east.</p><br>

<p>Operated by the Town of Fox Creek, the recreation area includes a campground featuring 52 campsites, a day use site, and a group use site. Camping season begins on May 24 and ends on October 1.</p><br>

<p>The Barbate  is a coastal river in southern Spain. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Barbate  in the province of Cádiz, autonomous community of Andalusia.</p><br>
<p>The Barbate begins in the northern foothills of the Sierra del Aljibe, at an elevation of 920 m above sea level. The upper portion of the river descends rapidly, running through Triassic terrain, and dropping 600 m in barely 10 km; after that, the river descends gently over Eocene terrain, losing only 200 m in the rest of its course, which after the confluence with the river Alberite flows through Quaternary terrain. Because the river, with a length of over 80 km, flows in all but its upper part through relatively flat land, it meanders considerably.</p><br>
<p>The Barbate and its tributaries drain an area of 1,290 km&sup2; (17.6 percent of the province of Cádiz). It runs through wide colluvial plains and the magnificent dark clay soils the Spanish call bujeo or the tierras negras andaluzas ("black Andalusian lands"), arriving finally in the desiccated former Janda Lagoon, where the River Almodóvar flows into the Barbate from the left. Other tributaries are the Rocinejo, the Celemín (river), the Álamo and the Fraja.</p><br>
<p>It then passes Alcalá de los Gazules, Benalup-Casas Viejas, and after passing through the gorge of Barca de Vejer, it passes through the 9 km of the Marismas de Barbate, to its mouth at Barbate.</p><br>

<p>The Porter Building is a historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Places located in the Downtown Historic District of Woodland, California.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The building was designed in 1913 by architect W.H. Weeks, architect of many other landmarks in Woodland such as the Woodland Opera House and the Yolo County Courthouse. Construction bids were accepted and Earle L. Younger of San Jose (later a Woodland resident) was the lowest bidder. The buildings exterior includes buff-colored Roman brick with elaborately decorated cornice and an arched entrance way that leads into the buildings lobby. The building had many modern amenities that were rare for its era, some of which were "firsts" for Woodland, including an electric elevator, steam heating system, and telephone service in each office. The successful completion of this major construction project was of great benefit to Younger, and helped him become one of the more popular commercial builders in Woodland until the 1940s.</p><br>
<p>Today the building is a part of the Downtown Woodland Historic District. During much of the 2000s, the building was left vacant, but it was announced in December 2009 that a private community college will be moving into the building. A project to retrofit the building to bring it up to date with current safety standards is underway. Changes to the interior of the building will take place in preparation for the classrooms and offices it will house. The current plans are to keep as many preexisting walls as possible. The steam heating system that was originally a luxury for the building is still intact, but a new heating and air conditioning system will also be put in place. The exterior of the building will be restored to its original state in 1913. The architect for the remodeling of the building is Duane Thompson.</p><br>
<p>The Household No. 1 Site is an archaeological site in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. Located off Timms Lane in Rostraver Township, the site lies on a bluff above the Youghiogheny River.</p><br>
<p>Local archaeologists knew of the site in the early part of the twentieth century; the best records of the site are from amateur George Fisher, who studied the area from 1900 to 1950. More complete records were obtained after a 1980 investigation, which was part of the planning for the construction of baseball fields in the vicinity. Because archaeologists discovered a significant range of artifacts in the location, the fields were moved to allow for continued excavation. This investigation determined that the site was that of a Monongahela village.</p><br>
<p>Evidence of warfare dominated the findings from the Household 1 Site. Many burials were present at the site — including sixteen at the site of one house alone — projectile points composed a much larger percentage of the total findings than did domestic tools. Furthermore, the small total number of artifacts overall shows that the site was only occupied for a short period of time, and its location on a river bluff suggests that its site was chosen for defensibility. These discoveries, like those at many other Monongahela village sites, demonstrate that the Household residents lived in a highly martial culture.</p><br>
<p>In 1986, the Household Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its archaeological significance.</p><br>
<p>Giantess Geyser is a fountain-type geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. It is known for its violent and infrequent eruptions of multiple water bursts that reach from 100 to 200 ft. Eruptions generally occur 2 to 6 times a year. The surrounding area may shake from underground steam explosions just before the initial water and/or steam eruptions. Eruptions may occur twice hourly, experience a tremendous steam phase, and continue activity for 4 to 48 hours.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Giantess Geyser was one of the seven geysers named during the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition to the park region in 1870. Walter Trumbull, a member of the expedition described Giantess in his diary:</p><br>

<p>Calf Island is a natural Michigan island in the Detroit River. The island has a surface elevation of 571 feet . It is located in the Trenton Channel about 1,000 feet  west of the southern tip of Grosse Ile and Swan Island, and Hamburg Island is just to the northwest. The 7-acre  island is administered locally by Grosse Ile Township.</p><br>
<p>Added in 2002, Calf Island was one of the newer additions to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. Under the refuge, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources identifies more than 29 species of waterfowl and 65 kinds of fish that make their home in and around the waters of Calf Island. The island often serves as a nesting location for a small number of herons. Calf Island is the smallest property added to the refuge, and the island has remained relatively isolated and unused compared to other areas in the region.</p><br>
<p>Merelava  is an island in the Banks Islands of northern Vanuatu.</p><br>
<p>It is situated in the southeastern part of the archipelago near Mota and Merig. The island is administratively part of Torba Province. Merelava has also been known as Star Island. It is located about 50 km east of Gaua.</p><br>

<p>Merelava was first sighted by Europeans during the Spanish expedition of Pedro Fernández de Quirós, from 25 to 29 April 1606. The island’s name was then charted as San Marcos.</p><br>

<p>Szrenica  is a mountain peak situated in the western part of Karkonosze on Polish and Czech border within the Karkonosze National Park. Its name originates from the Polish word szron . There is a weather station situated close to the summit. The peak is deforested, both the southern and the northern parts are used intensively for skiing. The elevation gain compared to the main range is approximately 60 m.</p><br>
<h2>Geology and geography</h2><br>
<p>The mountain is built of finegrained granite which, due to weathering shaped standalone rocks and vaste granite fields covered in moss, covering eastern part of the slope.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>There is a private mountain hut on the peak and a PTTK mountain shelter on the slope. The peak is accessible by chair lift (two part, with the transfer station). The slope has skiing facilities, including ski lifts and poles marking skiing trails in exposed and deforested areas. There are 3 routes for downhill skiing: Lolobrigida (4444 m), Śnieżynka and FIS - approved Trasa Zjazdowa; all constitute the system, which length is ca. 13 km. Two tourist trails cross the summit: Główny Szlak Sudecki and Polish - Czech Friendship Trail which merge here.</p><br>

<p>At the height of 1331 m a.s.l. there is a mountain weather station, the property of the University of Wrocław. It was founded and consequently built in years 1950.</p><br>

<p>Musreau Lake is a Mesotrophic lake northwestern Alberta. The closest city is Grande Prairie, Alberta. It has Six inlet creeks and outflows out to Musreau Creek that links to the Kakwa River, then the Smoky River. A small lake directly to the west is named Little Musreau Lake connected by a short unnamed creek, both are within the Musreau Lake Provincial Recreation Area established in 1978.</p><br>
<h2>Fauna</h2><br>
<p>There are seven different types of fish found in the lake these include; The longnose sucker (Catostomus catostomus), white sucker (Catostomus commersonii), bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus), burbot (Lota lota), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), northern pearl dace (Margariscus nachtriebi), and the brassy minnow (Hybognathus hankinsoni).</p><br>
<h2>Flora</h2><br>
<p>The lake contains Water lilies, Bulrush, and Horsetail. Trees in the area are the White spruce (Picea glauca), Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), Black spruce (Picea mariana), and Willows.</p><br>
<p>Peninsula Lake is a lake in Alberta, Canada. The lake is located 160 km southeast of the city of Edmonton. The salinity of Peninsula Lake causes characteristics such as temperature, nutrient concentrations and plant and animal communities to contrast with those from freshwater lakes. The lake is contains high levels of sulphate, sodium and bicarbonate/carbonate concentrations which, are produced by saline groundwater in the region. In winter, the temperature of water under the ice drops to 0°C, extremely low, even for Alberta lakes. Although the lake contains high mineral levels, plant growth is sparse. A few planktonic invertebrates are exceptionally abundant, but there are fewer species than in freshwater lakes. There are no fish living in the lake.</p><br>

<p>Reesor Lake is a small, popular trout-fishing reservoir located within Cypress Hills Provincial Park in the Municipal District of Cypress. It was named after David William Reesor, the son of Senator David Reesor, who settled in the area in 1900. The original Reesor ranch house still stands near the shore (Alta. Cult. Multicult. n.d.). Prior to 1960, the lake was two small, separate water bodies, called Twin Lakes. In 1960, a dam was constructed across the southeast end of the valley where the two lakes were located. Water was diverted into the reservoir from Battle Creek, raising the water level and thus creating a single lake.</p><br>
<p>Cypress Hills Provincial Park is situated approximately 65 km southeast of Medicine Hat, off Highway 41. Of the 12 campgrounds in the park, two are located near Reesor Lake. The first of these is Reesor Lake Dock Campground, which is situated on the north shore of the lake off the Reesor Lake Road. It is open year-round and has 24 random campsites, a water pump, a fishing pier and a boat launch. The second campground, Reesor Lake Campground, is located south of the lake on the south side of Battle Creek. It is open from May to September and provides 40 campsites, including 7 walk-in tenting sites, tap water, picnic tables, a picnic shelter, a playground and weekly interpretive programs. A boat launch is located at the western end of the dam. The only boat motors allowed on the lake are electric (Alta. For. Ld. Wild. 1988).</p><br>

<p>The Public Baths are on the north side of Union Street at its junction with Bath Street in Chester, Cheshire, England. The structure is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The public baths were built for Chester City Council between 1898 and 1901 and were designed by the local architect John Douglas on whose land they were constructed. It was an unusual commission for Douglas, as most of his previous designs had been for churches and houses. Designing the baths involved "technical complexity and specialist engineering work".</p><br>
<p>In the 1970s the city council were building Northgate Arena, a leisure complex which included a swimming pool, and they stated that they would not be able to afford to run both this and the old baths. However the City of Chester Swimming Club were of the opinion that the new baths would not be suitable for competitive swimming or for water polo. The Chester Swimming Association was formed and they took over the management of the baths on 14 April 1977. They made improvements to the building, including the installation of gas central heating and a new water filtration system, the addition of a kitchen, cafeteria and gymnasium, and strengthening of the structure. The slipper bath was replaced by a clubroom and bar.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The structure is partly in two storeys and partly in one storey. The frontage on Union Street is in two storeys. The lower storey is in red Ruabon brick with stone dressings, the upper storey is half-timbered, and the decorated chimney stacks are brick. Behind the frontage are the swimming baths and the boiler house is at the rear. The frontage is symmetrical; the small wing at the left originally contained the caretakers flat and a slipper bath. The ground floor contains two arched entrances, each with double doors and windows. Between the entrances is a pair of ogee-headed windows, over which is a stone panel containing the citys coat of arms. The upper storey is jettied and has three gables. Beneath the middle gable is a five-light mullioned canted oriel window, and under the outer arches are four-light mullioned casement windows. Internally there are two swimming baths. The larger, the Atlantic, 25 yd long, is deep enough for diving, and is surrounded by galleries. The other bath, the Pacific, is 20 yd long.</p><br>
<p>Douglas&#39; biographer, Edward Hubbard, commenting on the utilitarian nature of the building, stated that the domestic architectural style of its frontage "bears little relation in plan or character to what lies behind".</p><br>
<p>Przełęcz Karkonoska  is a mountain pass in the central Karkonosze Mountains on the Polish-Czech border. At 1,198 m, it is the lowest point of the main ridge of the Karkonosze and, despite lying on the Polish-Czech border, Przełęcz Karkonoska, the Polish name, has no Czech equivalent. In the Czech Republic, the area is usually referred to by the Špindlerova bouda , a mountain hut located there. Another chalet, situated on the Polish side of the border, is called Odrodzenie.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>The pass is accessible by a road either from Špindlerův Mlýn, served by bus, or from Poland. The Polish road is said to be one the steepest roads in Poland with the average inclination 7.2%, reaching 24% at maximum. Although road quality on the Polish side is relatively poor, the pass is much sought after by mountain bikers. The pass is a hub of hiking trails, including the Polish-Czech Friendship Trail.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>During World War II, the area was incorporated into Nazi Germany as part of the Sudetes. At that time, the Nazis held the allied prisoners in Špindlerova bouda. On the other hand, the Silesian (today Polish) mountain hut, was confiscated by Nazis as a property of a Jew and converted into a boarding house for Hitlerjugend members, and later into a hotel for Nazi officers.</p><br>
<p>Naraghi Lake is an artificial lake within the northeastern city of Modesto, in Stanislaus County, California.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Naraghi Lake was excavated in the 1980s as one of a planned series of water features for a large residential and commercial development complex straddling both sides of Oakdale Road. The lake is named after the Naraghi family, who were at one time large landowners in the area, and who planned the initial development. Shortly after excavating the lake, the Naraghi development was scrapped because of financial and market problems, leaving the lake as the only evidence of the plan that had been abandoned. The surrounding land was sold off and subsequently developed. The lake remains the property of the Naraghi family.</p><br>
<p>It was open to the public for fishing and recreational use until 2004, when liability issues and problems related to people dumping invasive species into the lake including a fish related to the piranha, finally prompted the Naraghi family to fence in the perimeter.</p><br>
<p>Over the years, numerous proposals for the land and the lake have been discussed, including converting it into a city park, building private residences around its perimeter, and building apartment or office complexes on the property. Most of these plans are hamstrung by the now-limited amount of land remaining around the lake, and have not been pursued beyond the discussion phase.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The surface area of the lake is 13 acres.</p><br>
<p>Naraghi Lake is supplied from MID canals and pipelines. It was built by excavating a hole in the otherwise flat terrain and was lined with bentonite to eliminate percolation.</p><br>
<h2>Fish</h2><br>
<p>The commonly found fish in the lake are Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish, Spotted Bass, White Bass, Striped Bass, and Trout. Other wildlife like ducks and geese can also be found in and near the lake.</p><br>
<p>Beeren Island , also known as Barren Island or Bear Island, is an island in the Hudson River within the town of Coeymans, New York. It lies 11 mi south of the city of Albany, and is at the border of four counties, Albany, Greene , Columbia , and Rensselaer . Beeren Island was once referred to as Mach-a-wa-meck, which may come from mashq  and wamock , meaning "place of many bears" and would make it in agreement with the Dutch name.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The island was claimed by the Patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer as the southern border of his patroonship of Rensselaerswijck, it was from the start of the New Netherland colony chosen as a fine site for fortifications to protect the patroons lands. In 1643 a fort named Rensselaersstein was built and garrisoned, and included mounted cannon; Nicolaes Coorn was appointed watchmaster. Every ship passing the island had to lower its flag in deference to the patroon and pay five stivers. The West India Company however refused to acknowledge the patroons exclusive right over the river, this led to tension between the two until the English conquered the entire New Netherland colony in 1664. The island was the location of the first white child born along the Hudson River.</p><br>
<p>The island has at various times also been occupied by a few Native American hunters, by the Coeymans family, a quarantine station, and was even the site of fortune hunters looking for Captain Kidd&#39;s hidden treasure.</p><br>
<p>Smoke Lake is a lake in northwest Alberta within the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16. It is located southwest of Fox Creek, approximately 9 km from Highway 43.</p><br>

<p>Spray Lakes Reservoir is a reservoir in Alberta, Canada. The Spray Lakes were a string of lakes formed along the Spray River, a tributary of the Bow River. With the damming of the river, the lakes were united in the Spray Lakes Reservoir.</p><br>
<p>It lies between the Goat Range and the Three Sisters ridge, at an elevation of 1,720 m.</p><br>

<p>The lake is drained by the Goat Creek, which empties into the Bow River about 25 km to the northwest, at the town of Banff.</p><br>
<p>Part of the water is diverted for hydroelectric purposes from Goat Pond via an open canal and through a canal tunnel into Whiteman&#39;s Pond and towards Canmore.</p><br>

<p>The western shore is paralleled by hiking trails, and picnic sites and campgrounds are set up on both sides of the lake.</p><br>
<p>St. Mary Reservoir is a reservoir in southwestern Alberta, Canada. It was created for irrigation purposes by the damming of the St. Mary River, which was completed in 1951. The Kainai Nation&#39;s Blood 148 Indian reserve borders its northwest side. There are camping and picnic areas at the reservoir, and it is a popular site for power boating, water skiing, windsurfing, swimming and fishing.</p><br>
<p>The Wally&#39;s Beach site (DhPg-8) is located at the bottom of the reservoir. In 1998 St. Mary Reservoir became an important site for late Pleistocene to early Holocene paleontology and archaeology when it was partially drained for the construction of a new spillway. Flooding of the reservoir had killed the vegetation and when the water level dropped, wind erosion removed layers of unprotected sand and silt, exposing trackways and bones of extinct mammals, as well as stone tools used by Paleoindian hunters.</p><br>
<h2>Age</h2><br>
<p>Based on radiocarbon dating of faunal remains, the assemblage preserved at St. Mary Reservoir were dated from about 11,000 years ago (11 to 11.35 kiloanna (ka) before present (B.P.)). This placed it in latest Pleistocene to earliest Holocene time. Re-examined in 2015, the dating for the camel, horse, and muskox bones subsequently changed this figure to 13.1 - 13.3 ka B.P.</p><br>
<h2>Paleoenvironment</h2><br>
<p>Eleven thousand years ago the Laurentide ice sheet had recently retreated from the area and the site was a windswept, semi-arid plain covered with grasses and low shrubby vegetation, similar to the mammoth steppes of Europe and Asia. The rich open grassland and the reliable supply of water at the river supported herds of large, late Pleistocene mammals and other animals.</p><br>
<h2>Paleontology</h2><br>
<p>The fossil assemblage includes skeletal remains of the extinct musk ox Bootherium bombifrons, the extinct bison Bison antiquus, the extant caribou Rangifer tarandus, Equus ferus, the extant badger Taxidea taxus, and other mustelids, as well as canids and ground squirrels. The equiid remains were originally identified as belonging to the extinct non-caballine horse Equus conversidens; later morphological and mtDNA analysis revealed that the remains actually belonged to Equus ferus.</p><br>
<p>Footprints and trackways preserved in silt include those of the extinct elephant Mammuthus primigenius and the extinct camel Camelops hesternus, in addition to those of horse, bison and caribou. Some of the trackways show evidence of browsing, herding, and social interaction.</p><br>
<p>In a study published in 2005 measurement of footprints from recorded mammoth trackways showed that only 30% of the animals were juveniles. Healthy herds of African elephants include 50% to 70% young animals, while lower numbers are seen in connection with stresses from poaching. The study is quoting the original radiocarbon date for the footprints at 11,000 to 11,300 years B.P., but both the original and re-examined date place the footprints in the period of human spread across North America, suggesting a correlation between human presence and local decline in herd viability.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>The herds of animals and the reliable supply of water attracted Paleoindian hunters, and the artifacts recovered from the site suggest that it was a hunting locality. Most of the material consists of stone flakes and flake fragments. A stone chopper, a biface fragment and a few flake tools have been found associated with remains of horse and musk ox. There are also Clovis points with preserved residue of horse and bison protein.</p><br>
<p>Bassenfell Manor is a manor house in Bassenthwaite, Cumbria, overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake in England&#39;s Lake District. It is used as a Christian residential centre hosting school groups, youth groups, church groups and holidays for individuals and families. It is situated in over 3 acre of grounds and the manor has 19 bedrooms plus a self-catering apartment and two live-in apartments for management.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Manor was built in 1842 by William Rathbone VI, a Member of Parliament who made his wealth from shipping in Liverpool where a statue of him still resides in the campus of the University. The Rathbone family were devout Quakers, William Rathbone being a very close friend of Florence Nightingale who sent a message to his family following his death "England has lost one of its best son&#39;s". Basil Rathbone the actor (famous for his portrayal as Sherlock Holmes) was connected with Bassenfell and he probably spent some holidays at the manor, but never actually lived there.</p><br>
<p>Bassenfell Manor was built as a country residence for William Rathbone&#39;s family and took five years to build. The house has many nautical features; the wing containing bedrooms 1-5 looks like the bridge of a ship and the middle and top corridors as the decks. It is believed that the Tank room was originally the servants quarters and that what is now the staff linen room was used as the maternity room whenever children were born.</p><br>
<p>Since being sold by the Rathbone family around 1910, the Manor has served as a hotel, old people’s home, and during the war a school for evacuees. It was purchased by the Christian Outdoor Pursuits Trust in August 1983 and was opened as a Christian centre at Easter, 1984.</p><br>
<p>E. & B. Holmes Machinery Company Building, also known as The Cooperage, is a historic factory building located at Buffalo in Erie County, New York. It is a roughly rectangular brick building composed of three primary sections of four-, three-, and two-stories, which encircle a central courtyard. The three sections are the Mill Building , Forge Building , and Pattern Building . The E. & B. Holmes Machinery Company revolutionized the barrel making industry by patenting the design and manufacturing of machinery used for mass-producing barrels. The company operated from 1840 until 2002.</p><br>

<p>Capo di Bove is an archeological site on the Appian Way on the outskirts of Rome, Italy. It contains the thermal baths of a vast property owned in the 2nd century AD by Herodes Atticus and his wife Annia Regilla.</p><br>
<p>Formerly privately owned, the property at No. 222 on the Appian Way was acquired by the Italian Government in 2002. The area of the baths was at that time being used for grape growing. The origin of the name given to the site dates back to medieval times, when the area was known as the “Casale di Capo di Bove e di Capo di Vacca” (Hamlet of the Heads of the Ox and Cow), so named after the sculptures on the nearby tomb of Caecilia Metella. The area was purchased in 1302 by Cardinal Francesco Caetani, nephew of Pope Boniface VIII. In the 17th century the area served as a hospital while in the 19th century it was under the control of the monastery at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.</p><br>
<p>The excavations, which can be visited daily free of charge, revealed thermal baths dating back to the middle of the 2nd century. These baths were used until at least the 4th century and were almost certainly for private use. Greek inscriptions found there remind us of the Greek origins of Herodes Atticus. There are several well-preserved mosaics and the high quality of building materials used suggest a very elegant environment with the usual rooms found in Roman baths, i.e. a caldarium (hot bath), a tepidarium (warm bath) and frigidarium (cold bath). Water was provided by two large cisterns.</p><br>
<p>The site also includes a former farmhouse converted by the previous occupant of the site into a villa. The building incorporates numerous Roman ruins into the walls, including pipes from the baths that are built into some of the windows. An internal exhibition contains photographs of the Appian Way in the first half of the 20th Century.</p><br>
<p>Great Tenasserim River or the Tanintharyi River is a major river of southeastern Burma. It flows through the Tanintharyi Region, past the town of Tanintharyi before entering the sea at Myeik . The river rises from the Tenasserim Range at an altitude of 2,074 m and flows into the Andaman Sea. The region formed by this river is also known as Tenasserim, Tanintharyi in Burmese, which is in a constricted coastal region in southeastern Myanmar , which has border with Thailand on the east and the Andaman Sea on the west.</p><br>
<p>While non-indigenous fruit trees and other traces of a large population that once occupied the river banks are evident, the ethnic groups who live in this river valley are the Karens in the west and north, Thais in the south, and Burmans who speak a distinct dialect of Burmese.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Great Tenasserim River is one of the major rivers of southeastern Burma, and the most substantial running through the Tanintharyi Region. The river is formed at the confluence of rivers Kamaungthwe and Ban near Myitta. River Kamaungthwe rises in the Tenasserim Range at a height of 2,074 m and the Ban flows from the south.</p><br>
<p>The Myitta River, one of its main northern tributaries joins the Tenasserim from the right northwest of Myitta town. After passing by several towns, including Tagu, Banlaw, Wunna, Thamihla, as well as the right bank towns of Tharapon and Kahan, it reaches Tanintharyi (Tenasserim).</p><br>
<p>Tanintharyi, the capital of the province, is located on the southern bank of the Great Tenasserim where it is joined by the Little Tenasserim River. Myeik is located on the islands peninsula that projects into the Andaman Sea. The rivers arrival at the Andaman Sea is 150 mi to the south of Tavoy and about 45 mi north of where the Lenya River enters the sea. The river delta stretches over a coast line of 20 mi with outlet channels of which the navigable channel is 3 mi south of the town of Mergui at the mouth.</p><br>
<p>The river banks are characterized as almost perpendicular in some area. Islands dot the river in the low land areas. Rapids occur in narrow areas of the channel. The tide is felt 10 mi above Tanintharyi. The Tenasserim plains to the north are drained by a series of short rivers and tributaries. Soil erosion is reported in the upland ridges of the region. Thuggoo River, as well as the Hti-phan-ko stream on the Great Tenasserim&#39;s right bank.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In the late 18th century, during the wars on territorial dispute between Myanmar and Thailand, Great Tenasserim River region came under the control of the Burmese. In the first Anglo-Burmese War (1824–26) British took control of the region. They first occupied Myeik town – the first town of Burma to become a part of British India in 1826. Thereafter, in 1941 during World War II, the Japanese occupied Tenasserim region, and they held Burma from 1941 to 1945. After the war, in 1948, the region became independent from Britain.</p><br>
<h2>Economic development</h2><br>
<p>The agricultural operations in the Tenasserim River valley is mainly paddy rice, mostly near Tavoy, vegetables, coconuts, rubber, and teak. Salt extraction is also done. Wood and bamboo products are manufactured in Tavoy. Fishing in the sea is a major industry at Myeik, the port town at the mouth of the river and exports of sea fish has brought prosperity to the town in particular. As a result, in the 1990s the town started flourishing with modern buildings. Large boats can navigate the river as far inland as Tanintharyi (Tenasserim Town).</p><br>
<h3>Resources</h3><br>
<p>The river is said to be rich in sources of manganese.</p><br>
<p>Coal deposits were discovered on the Great Tenasserim around 1838, and five years later, an experimental coal seam was worked. By 1863, indications of coal fields, though not of consequence, were noted on the Great Tenasserim above Tanintharyi, while a 6 ft bed of crop coal above the Falls of the Great Tenasserim was determined to be of inferior quality and abandoned. Balfour, in 1871, described a principal mine worked about 90 mi from the rivers mouth and said of the river valley coal that its best parts were considered an improvement over ordinary lignite while equal to bituminous coals inferior portions. Extensive coal deposits have been found on the river banks. They are concentrated in the river valley about 67 mi upstream from the Mergu River mouth. It is in the form of thin beds of shales, sandstones and conglomerates. Its extraction, however, has been limited.</p><br>
<h3>Hydroelectric power</h3><br>
<p>In 2009, an announcement was made that the Burmese authorities had begun surveying the river for a potential hydroelectric power project along the river which would generate electricity to be exported to Thailand and Singapore. The first survey of the river for a hydroelectric project was conducted in 2007 by the KNU. The state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper claimed that a signing ceremony for the Tenasserim Hydropower Project was held on October 9, 2008, between the Burmese Ministry of Electric Power No. 1, the Italian-Thai Development Public Co. Ltd., of Thailand and Singapore&#39;s Wind Fall Energy Services Ltd. The Burmese military and Thai officials took water levels in December 2008. A Thai expert has been hired to take water level measurements of the river in different areas in different seasons to assess the best location for a dam. Two possible sites have since been identified for a dam which is expected to generate 600 Mega Watts. The first is located in the upper river in the village of Ler Pa Doh and the second is located in the lower river course near Muro, about three hours apart down the river by boat.</p><br>
<h2>Fish fauna</h2><br>
<p>A new fish species of the loaches family (the true loaches, which are termed as "Old World freshwater fish") was captured for the first time in 1993 in the Great Tenasserim River and was named as Kamphol Udomritthiruj after the person who found it. It was recognized to bear apparent resemblance to the Botia rostrata species of loaches. Its final identification led to the species being named Botia udomritthiruji, common name Emperor loach. It is an aquarium type of fish.</p><br>
<p>This loach has not been exported from the area due to a serious insurgency problem prevailing in the region.</p><br>
<p>The Xiao River is the Main Stream of the upper Xiang River located in Yongzhou, Hunan. As of 2011 Water Census of China, it has a length of 346 km from the headwaters to the confluence in the Ping Island of Yongzhou with the Xiang River West Branch  originating from Guangxi. With the tributaries, its drainage basin area is 12,094 km&sup2;.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Xiao River boders to the south by the Mengzhu Mountains and Gui River of Xi River tributary, to the east by Yangming Mountains (阳明山), Chongling River and Lianjiang River of Bei River tributary, to the west by the Dupang Mountains. The tributaries of the Xiao reach Lianzhou of Guangdong and Guangxi. Originating from the southern side of Yegou Mountain (野狗岭) in Zhulin Village (竹林村) of Xiangjiangyuan Township, Lanshan County, the Xiao River flows southwest to northeast through Lanshan, Jianghua, Jiangyong, Ningyuan, Dao, Shuangpai, Lengshuitan and Lingling eight counties, joining the Main Stem of the Xiang at the confluence in Ping Island of Yongzhou with the West Branch from Guangxi.</p><br>
<p>War Memorial Park is a public park in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. It is located south of the town center, bounded by River Street, Arch Street and the Town River. The park was established in the 1930s and was constructed in part with funding from the Works Progress Administration. The park is located at the site of West Bridgewaters earliest industrial activities, a mill site dating to the 17th century. This early use spawned a variety of other water-powered industrial uses in the 18th and 19th centuries, and was notably the site of Ames Shovel Companys first factory. The 1936 creation of the park resulted in the donation of a large number of historic industrial artifacts, which are displayed on its grounds.</p><br>

<p>Figueroa Mountain is a summit in Santa Barbara County in the USA state of California. It is in the San Rafael Mountains, part of the Transverse Ranges group of ranges. The mountain is located in Los Padres National Forest.</p><br>
<p>Figueroa Mountain was named for a member of the well-known southern California family, the most eminent of whom was José Figueroa, governor of Alta California in 1833-35.</p><br>
<p>The Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area has excellent spring wildflower displays after wet winters. Late March brings out the early blooming specimens such as purple shooting stars (Dodecatheon clevelandii ssp. clevelandii). Later arrivals on the mountain include chocolate lilies (Fritillaria biflora), and the scarlet Indian paintbrush (Castilleja spp). The open grassland areas support a profusion of annual species including goldfields (Lasthenia spp.), sky lupine (Lupinus nanus), and California poppy (Eschscholzia californica). Other favorites include pitcher sage (Salvia spathacea) and blue dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum). The plant community here is an inland central oak woodland dominated by valley oak (Quercus lobata), blue oak (Quercus douglasii), interior live oak (Quercus wislizenii), and gray pine (Pinus sabiniana). The companion shrub species are manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.), coffeeberry and redberry (Rhamnus spp.) and gooseberry and currants (Ribes spp.).</p><br>
<p>Ovingdean Grange is a Grade II listed manor house situated on the south coast of England in the village of Ovingdean, east of Brighton. One of the oldest and most historical residences in Brighton, it gave its name to the novel Ovingdean Grange by the popular 19th-century writer William Harrison Ainsworth.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Ovingdean is a small village just outside Brighton, where Ovingdean Grange is the oldest residence. The oldest building is the 11th-century parish church of St. Wulfran&#39;s opposite Ovingdean Grange. Saxon farmhouses were first built in Ovingdean in the 11th century, and no firm evidence exists of when the Grange was first built. It is most likely to have been built circa 1540, by Thomas Geere, a yeoman from Wivelsfield who settled in Ovingdean.</p><br>
<p>Over much of its history, it has been the Granges occupant who acted as churchwarden for St. Wulfrans opposite. The north side, which was the original entrance, is the oldest part of the house, with flint walls and stone quoins, just like those of the church.</p><br>
<p>Over the years the house has seen many changes architecturally. As a Tudor manor house, the Grange had servants&#39; quarters and a cellar below ground. Since then it has been altered, the most noticeable addition being the false Georgian façade in 1824.</p><br>
<p>The house was used as a family home in the 1900s. From 1945 the Grange was occupied by former Mayor of Brighton and local farmer Frank Masefield Baker, although, owing to the ill health of one of its inhabitants, it eventually fell into disrepair. Brighton Council eventually auctioned it off in 1987. After it had remained empty for eight years, the new owners, Dr. Harry Brunjes and wife Jacquie, undertook extensive renovations in 1993 to restore it to its former state. In 2011, Steve Coogan bought it for £2.45 million.</p><br>
<p>Ovingdean Grange was listed at Grade II by English Heritage on 20 August 1971. As of February 2001, it was one of 1,124 Grade II-listed buildings and structures, and 1,218 listed buildings of all grades, in the city of Brighton and Hove.</p><br>
<h3>Lords of the Manor</h3><br>
<p>It is unusual in that from approximately 1170 until 1987 the Lord of the Manor who owned the Grange and its farmlands did not live in the village. Instead, the farm and the Grange were leased to tenants, who then farmed the land. The ownership of the manor estate from 1066 until today is known from legal conveyances and church documents, but knowledge of the identities of the tenant farmers is patchy.</p><br>

<h3>The novel Ovingdean Grange</h3><br>
<p>The Grange is the subject of legend. In 1857, the popular novelist W. Harrison Ainsworth wrote Ovingdean Grange: A Tale of the South Downs, in which he described how the future King Charles II stayed there for less than 24 hours before escaping to France in 1651, fathering a child in the process. King Charles is reported to have sheltered in the chimney breast of the master bedroom.</p><br>

<p>The Groot Letaba River headwater streams originate in the Drakensberg Escarpment, descending in long runs with an occasional riffle or pool, mostly in the Limpopo province of South Africa. At the higher level the Broederstroom River, Politsi River, Debengeni River, Letsitele River, and Thabina River, join the Groot Letaba. Lower down the Molototsi River  and Nsama River join before the Nsami Dam. Just before the Kruger National Park the Klein Letaba River flows into the river. From here the combined rivers are simply known as the Letaba River.</p><br>
<p>More than 20 major dams have been constructed in the Groot Letaba River catchment. The Tzaneen Dam on the Groot Letaba River and the Middle Letaba Dam are the two largest dams in the Limpopo Province. <p>Cougar Mountain is a peak in the Issaquah Alps in King County, Washington. It is part of the highlands in the Eastside suburbs of Seattle, and is the lowest and westernmost of the Alps. About two-thirds of Cougar Mountain has experienced residential development, and is home to many neighborhood communities such as Lakemont, but the forested heart of the hill was officially preserved by King County in June 1983 as Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. Cougar Mountain is also home to the Cougar Mountain Zoo.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Cougar Mountain was formed in the Miocene when tectonic forces folded western Washington along a northwest axis and created the Newcastle Anticline. The anticline exposed earlier (Eocene to Oligocene) sedimentary and volcanic rocks that, due to erosion, now form the surface of Cougar Mountain. The northern edge of Cougar Mountain is distinct due to the Seattle Fault, which runs along I-90. The Seattle Fault caused a large earthquake approximately 1100 years ago.</p><br>
<h2>Ecology</h2><br>
<p>Cougar Mountain is part of the Eastern Puget Uplands level IV ecoregion, as defined by the EPA. This ecoregion is a transition between the ecology of the Puget Sound and the forests of the Cascades. The ecology of Cougar Mountain is thus more similar to the Sammamish Plateau than the rest of the Issaquah Alps.</p><br>
<p>Cougar Mountain contains species and habitats that were once common closer to Puget Sound. Extensive logging has rendered the ecosystem less diverse than its original state.</p><br>

<p>The Lucas Mansion, also known as the Hiddenite Center, is a historic home located at Hiddenite, Alexander County, North Carolina. It was built about 1900, and is a three-story, frame Queen Anne style dwelling. It features a two-story wraparound porch. It was enlarged to its present size by 1928. It was owned by James Paul Lucas, a South Carolina native and international diamond merchant.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.</p><br>
<p>The Hiddenite Center has restored the first floor of the Lucas Mansion with period furnishings and a collection of local gemstones and minerals. The second floor is used as a regional art gallery and includes a gift shop. The third floor features a large collection of dolls on display.</p><br>
<p>Sugar Mountain is a mountain in the North Carolina High Country and wholly in the Pisgah National Forest. Its elevation reaches 5,236 feet  and is split along the Eastern Continental Divide, generating feeder streams for the Linville, Elk, and North Toe rivers. On its north slope resides the Village of Sugar Mountain.</p><br>
<h2>Attractions</h2><br>
<p>Sugar Mountain has two golf courses, Sugar Mountain Country Club and Linville Ridge Country Club (on adjacent Flattop Mountain), which are open late spring to early fall. Walking and mountain bike trails are also open during the summer months on the mountain. In the Winter, the Sugar Mountain Ski Resort is open, which offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.</p><br>
<h2>North Carolina Ridge Law</h2><br>
<p>In 1983, the Citadel was built on what is known as Sugar Top. The condominium complex, which can be seen for miles away, became what many consider an eyesore. Because of many complaints by locals and visitors, the state of North Carolina passed the Mountain Ridge Protection Act of 1983 so that nothing similar can be built again. Many students of nearby Appalachian State University in Boone, NC refer to the building as "The Sugar Cube" because of its unnaturally awkward square shape on the horizon.</p><br>
<p>The Centre Harbor Village Historic District encompasses the historic village of Center Harbor, New Hampshire. It consists of a small cluster of properties located north of Plymouth Street and Main Street, as well as the Nichols Memorial Library , and the Kona Fountain, which is located in the center of that intersection. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The village of Center Harbor arose in the late 18th century at a natural transit point dictated by the geography of Lake Winnipesaukee, whose northwesterly major port it is, Squam Lake, which lies a few miles to the north, and hilly terrain separating the two bodies of water. With the advent of steamboats and railroads in the mid-19th century, it became a major transit point for travelers to the White Mountains, and prospered from the tourist trade. About half the village&#39;s ten buildings predate 1850, while the rest were built between then and about 1920, reflecting this period of economic success.</p><br>
<p>The oldest building in the district is probably the Locust Cottage, built c. 1800. It is a two-story wood frame structure, distinctive for its porch with latticework balustrade. The Morse & Stanley Block is a commercial wood-frame building which was built before 1837, but was altered somewhat and now has the appearance of a late-19th-century commercial building. Three other houses predate 1837, the most notable being the Coe House and Barn, built in 1820 but significantly expanded and restyled c. 1850 with the latest Victorian architectural fashion. The Kona Drinking Fountain which adorns the main intersection was dedicated in 1907; it was a gift of businessman Herbert Dumaresq, owner of the Kona Farm estate in nearby Moultonborough. The Nichols Memorial Library was a gift of summer resident James E. Nichols of New York City; it is a Classical Revival structure built in 1909.</p><br>
<p>The Joseph Carpenter Silversmith Shop is a historic building that was built between 1772 and 1774 on the green in Norwichtown, now a section of Norwich, Connecticut. It is a 30 ft by 24 ft -story clapboarded building with a gambrel roof. The interior has a single brick chimney that was used for the forge, but it has been modified and adapted for modern use with modern doors, electric lighting and heat, and a disappearing overhead stairway that leads to the attic. Joseph Carpenter  was a successful of silversmith, clockmaker, and pewterer, and shared the building with his brother, a merchant. The shop was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 6, 1970, and was listed as a contributory property for the Norwichtown Historic District on January 17, 1973.</p><br>
<h2>Original occupants</h2><br>
<p>Born in 1747 to Joseph and Elizabeth Carpenter (née Lathrop), Joseph Carpenter was a successful silversmith in Norwich, Connecticut. The shop was constructed between 1772 and 1774 and Joseph shared it with his brother Gardner Carpenter, who operated a mercantile business from the shop. In 1775, Joseph Carpenter married Eunice Fitch, and they had six children. He died in 1804. Carpenter was noted to be one of the "most successful of the Norwich silversmiths, clockmakers and pewterers..."</p><br>
<h2>Design</h2><br>
<p>Facing southeast on the Norwichtown green, the Joseph Carpenter Silversmith Shop is a 30 ft by 24 ft -story clapboarded building with a gambrel roof. Constructed between 1772 and 1774, the building was built on a stone foundation and has a stone stoop leading to the front entrance. The gambrel roof is framed without a ridge pole. It overhangs the front and back facades by 2 ft, but does not project the sides. At the time of the National Historic Register of Places nomination, the roof used wooden shingles. The National Historic Register of Places noted that the partitioning was "recent" at the time of its 1970 nomination.</p><br>
<h2>Importance</h2><br>
<p>The Joseph Carpenter Silversmith Shop is an example of a small frame silversmiths shop, and is believed to be the only surviving example in New England. The shop was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 6, 1970 and it was listed as a contributory property for the Norwichtown Historic District on January 17, 1973. As early as 1917, the shop was the subject of a preservation effort. The shop was photographed by the Historic American Buildings Survey. The shop was featured as part of a historic house tour in 1993s "Reflections on the Past."</p><br>
<p>The Laconia Passenger Station is a historic railroad station at 9-23 Veterans Square in downtown Laconia, New Hampshire. It was built in 1892 for the Boston and Maine  Railroad and is a prominent regional example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The building now houses a variety of commercial businesses.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former Laconia Passenger Station is located on the north side of downtown Laconia, occupying an irregular block formed by North Main Street, Veterans Square, Pleasant Street, and New Salem Street. It is set at an angle to North Main Street, from which it is separated by the grassy area of Veterans Square, and faces roughly southeast. It is a long and roughly rectangular structure, with its northwest side facing where the tracks of the B&M formerly ran. It is built out of granite and red sandstone, and has a central area, the former waiting room, that is 2-1/2 stories in height, with a pyramidal roof. That area is flanked by single-story sections with tall hip roofs, and its front is dominated by a porte-cochère with large rounded arches. The waiting room area features a large sandstone fireplace, and has a floor covered in patterned tile.</p><br>
<p>The station was built in 1892 to a design by New York City architect Bradford Gilbert. Gilbert is best known for designing the first steel-framed curtain wall building, the Tower Building in New York, but also designed a number of railroad stations, at least five of which are on the National Register. It was built for the Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad, which was acquired three years later by the Boston & Maine. The size and scale of the station were due in part to the activism of Charles Busiel, a local businessman who was later governor of New Hampshire. It is one of the only 19th-century stations of this scale and architectural sophistication to survive in the state.</p><br>
<p>The station served the railroad until 1965, with portions of it dedicated to local police and court functions as early as 1963. The building has since been repurposed for commercial uses.</p><br>
<p>The East Jaffrey Historic District is a historic district running roughly along NH Route 124  through Jaffrey, New Hampshire. It encompasses what is now the economic and civic heart of the town, centered on the Jaffrey Mills and the crossing of the Contoocook River by Route 124. It extends as far west as St. Patrick&#39;s Church beyond Charlonne Street and as far east as the US Post Office building at Route 124 and Ellison Street. To the north it extends along Peterborough Street  to Christian Court, and to the south it extends along River Street  and School Street to their junction. The district includes early 19th-century residential structures, as well as industrial buildings and housing associated with the Jaffrey Mills which arose in the mid-19th century. The area was known as "East Jaffrey" prior to its rise in economic ascendancy over what is now Jaffrey Center, the center of Jaffrey when it was chartered in 1773.</p><br>
<p>The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.</p><br>
